Sudoku Strategy Guide
Sudoku only has one rule, but the gap between a beginner who slowly fills in obvious cells and a solver who tears through a Grandmaster puzzle is entirely a matter of technique. Every puzzle in our app is guaranteed solvable through logic alone, which means every sticking point you hit has a clean deduction waiting to be found — you just need to know what to look for. This guide walks through that technique ladder from the ground up.
Beginner Principles
Start every puzzle, and every stuck moment within a puzzle, by scanning for the two simplest deductions:
- Naked singles — a cell where only one digit is still possible, because every other digit 1–9 already appears somewhere in its row, column, or box. This is the easiest thing to spot and the one every beginner should check first.
- Hidden singles — a digit that can only legally go in one cell within a particular row, column, or box, even though that cell might still look like it has several candidates. These are easy to miss because the cell itself doesn’t look “forced” — you have to look at where else the digit could go, not just what else the cell could be.
Beyond spotting these two patterns, get comfortable with the number pad’s remaining-count badges — they tell you at a glance which digits still need placing, which is often the fastest way into a hidden single: pick the digit with the fewest remaining copies and scan the grid for where it must go next.
Common Mistakes
- Guessing when stuck. Since every puzzle we serve is logic-solvable, getting stuck means there’s a deduction you haven’t found yet, not a fork you need to gamble on. Guessing (and being wrong) leads to a much harder cleanup later, since a single incorrect digit can silently poison the rest of your candidates.
- Not using pencil marks. Trying to hold every candidate for every cell in your head works for beginner puzzles and falls apart completely by the harder difficulty tiers. Get in the habit of noting candidates for a whole row, column, or box before hunting for patterns in it.
- Scanning randomly instead of systematically. Jumping around the grid looking for “something obvious” is slow. A consistent routine — check for naked singles, then hidden singles, then pairs, working row by row or box by box — finds deductions faster than intuition alone.
- Forgetting to re-scan after every placement. Placing a single digit can immediately create a new naked or hidden single elsewhere, especially in a nearly-full row or box. Many players move on too quickly and miss the follow-up deduction sitting right there.
Intermediate Ideas
Once singles are second nature, the next tier of techniques works by eliminating candidates rather than placing digits directly:
- Naked pairs and triples — if two cells in the same row, column, or box share the exact same two candidates (and only those two), then those two digits can be eliminated from every other cell in that group, even though you haven’t placed either one yet. Naked triples work the same way with three cells and three candidates.
- Hidden pairs and triples — the mirror image: if two digits only appear as candidates in the same two cells within a group, those two cells must hold those two digits, letting you strip away any other candidates those cells were holding.
- Pointing pairs — when a digit’s only possible cells within a box all sit on the same row or column, that digit can be eliminated from the rest of that row or column outside the box, since one of those boxed cells has to take it.
These techniques don’t fill in a digit on the spot — they narrow down candidates, which then often unlocks a naked or hidden single a move or two later. Learning to chain “eliminate, then re-check for singles” is the core loop of intermediate solving.
Advanced Concepts
Harder puzzles require pattern-based eliminations that span the whole grid rather than a single row, column, or box:
- X-Wing — if a digit has exactly two possible cells in each of two different rows, and those cells line up in the same two columns, that digit can be eliminated from the rest of those columns. Swordfish is the same idea extended to three rows and three columns.
- Simple coloring — following a chain of cells that alternate between two possible states for a digit, then checking whether any cell would “see” both states at once — which proves that state is impossible there.
- XY-Wing and chains — deductions that follow a linked sequence of cells, each sharing a candidate with the next, to prove a digit can be safely eliminated somewhere down the chain even though no single pair or triple pattern covers it directly.
At the very top of the difficulty ladder, puzzles may require forcing chains — testing what happens if a specific cell takes each of its two possible values in turn, and finding that both paths force the same outcome somewhere else on the board, which proves that outcome regardless of which value turns out to be correct. This is still pure logic, never a guess: the point is that the deduction holds no matter which branch is true.
If you get stuck on a hard puzzle, try our technique hint before reaching for a full reveal — it will name the exact pattern involved (for example, “X-Wing” or “Simple coloring”), which is often enough to help you see it yourself next time without spoiling the placement.
Practising Against the Bots
Sudoku doesn’t have an opponent to play against, but our ten difficulty levels are built around exactly the technique ladder above, which makes them a genuinely useful practice tool even without a bot to beat:
- Levels 1–3 (Beginner, Easy, Casual) never require more than naked singles, hidden singles, and simple pairs. These are the right levels to build speed and accuracy on the fundamentals before moving on.
- Levels 4–6 (Medium, Tricky, Hard) introduce triples, pointing pairs, box/line reduction, and eventually X-Wing. If you’re comfortable with pairs but keep stalling here, that’s a sign to specifically study pointing pairs and X-Wings rather than just grinding more puzzles.
- Levels 7–8 (Very Hard, Expert) bring in swordfish, simple coloring, and the wing techniques. These puzzles will reliably stall if you’re only using pair-and-triple logic — treat a stall here as the signal to learn the next technique on the list, rather than a reason to guess.
- Levels 9–10 (Master, Grandmaster) require chains and, at the very top, forcing chains — puzzles that are still logic-solvable but demand tracking a sequence of linked deductions rather than a single local pattern.
Because the level of a puzzle is defined by the hardest technique it requires, not by how many clues it starts with, climbing the ladder one level at a time is a genuinely structured way to learn new techniques in order, rather than just tackling harder-looking grids. When a puzzle at your current level stops feeling stuck, that’s the sign to move up.
