Privacy Policy — Othello

Last updated: 2026-06-08  ·  Applies to Othello on Google Play (Android) and the 2DGameClub website

The Short Version

  • You can play Othello against the computer without an account. We only collect data from the cloud once you sign in or go online.
  • We collect what we need to run online multiplayer, leaderboards, achievements, and your purchases — nothing more.
  • We never collect your precise location, contacts, microphone, or camera.
  • We never sell your data.
  • You can delete your account, and all the personal data attached to it, at any time from Settings.

What We Collect

Account information

When you create an account or sign in, we store:

  • Username — required. This is shown publicly on the leaderboard and in game invites. It is not your real name; you choose it.
  • Display name — optional. A friendly name shown on your profile.
  • Email address — only if you sign in with email and password. Stored securely and never shown to other players.
  • Google Play Games ID — if you sign in with Google Play Games on Android. Used internally only to recognise your account.
  • Avatar — the profile picture or in-app avatar you select.

If you play as a Guest (no sign-in), we do not collect any of the above. A random anonymous ID is stored only on your device, and guest play is limited to single-player against the computer, tutorials, and free play.

Game data

To run games and rankings, we store:

  • The moves you make in a game and how long each move took
  • Game results (win, loss, draw, or abandoned) and your match history
  • Your ELO rating and peak ELO — used for ranked play and the leaderboard
  • Your overall statistics — games played, won, lost, drawn, time played
  • Achievements you have earned
  • Challenges you send to or receive from other players

Your match history and ELO rating are visible to other players on your public profile and on the leaderboard. Other parts of your game data are private to your account.

Usage data (analytics)

To understand how players use Othello and to improve it, we record anonymous events such as: opening the app, starting and finishing a game, completing a tutorial or puzzle, earning a daily login reward, unlocking an achievement, watching a rewarded ad, making a purchase, applying a theme, updating your profile, and submitting feedback. These events are tied only to your account's internal ID — never to your email or name.

Settings

Your in-app preferences — theme, sound and music volume, haptics on/off, and notifications on/off.

Purchase information

If you buy something (Remove Ads or a coin pack), we store a record that you own it — the product purchased, the platform, the date, and a purchase reference from our payment partner. We do not store your payment card or any banking details; those are handled entirely by Google Play Billing.

Device information

Basic technical details — app version, Android version, and device model — used only for diagnosing crashes and bugs.

What We Don't Collect

  • Passwords — handled securely by Google and our authentication provider; we never see or store them.
  • Precise or background location.
  • Your contacts, calendar, photos, microphone, or camera.
  • Payment card or bank details — handled entirely by Google Play Billing.
  • Real name or any personal details beyond the optional ones listed above.

We never sell your personal data to anyone.

How We Use Your Data

To run the game. Your moves, game state, and results let us play out online matches, save your progress, and sync across your devices.

For the leaderboard and ranked play. Your ELO rating and username appear on the global leaderboard so players can compete fairly.

For personalisation. Your settings, themes, and avatar are saved so the app looks and behaves the way you like it.

For achievements and rewards. We track your milestones and daily streaks to award achievements and coins.

To improve Othello. Anonymous usage events help us find rough edges, fix bugs, and decide what to build next.

For notifications. If you enable them, we send a push notification when it is your turn in an online game. You can turn these off in Settings.

For purchases. We confirm and restore what you have bought so your Remove Ads status and coins follow you across devices.

Your Rights

Access: Request a copy of the data we hold about you — email us at the address below.

Deletion: Delete your account at any time from Settings → Account → Delete Account. This removes all your personal data after a 30-day grace period (in case you change your mind).

Correction: Update your username or display name in Settings → Profile.

Opt out of analytics: Email us and we will flag your account so it is excluded from analytics aggregation.

If you are in a region covered by the GDPR or similar laws, these rights apply to you, and account deletion removes all of your personal data.

Children

Othello is rated Everyone (E) on Google Play. Our target audience is 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If we learn that we have collected personal data from a child under 13, we will delete it within 30 days. If you believe a child has provided us data, please contact us at the address below.

By default, Othello requests non-personalised ads from Google AdMob. This means AdMob does not build a behavioural profile based on your identity or cross-app activity.

Changes to This Policy

If we make a significant change to this policy, we will let you know through the What's New screen in the app. Minor wording corrections may be made without a separate notice. The "Last updated" date at the top always reflects the current version.
